our story
Our story began over a decade ago with a simple monthly happy hour among friends. As LGBTQ bars across New Jersey began to close, that small meetup became something more: an organic community built on friendship and the need for connection.
In 2020, the pandemic put all in-person events on hold. Many people relocated to New Jersey for work, safety, or a fresh start, often without existing community ties. As the world reopened, the need for genuine, face-to-face connection became more urgent than ever.
In 2022, a few of us came together to reimagine what that connection could look like. We launched Gay Social, expanding our original idea into structured, community-driven programming across the state, welcoming new members and reaching new towns.
In 2024, we became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Today, Gay Social is a statewide network of over 3,000 members. Through accessible events, strategic partnerships, and ongoing engagement, we bring LGBTQ people together to connect, celebrate, and support one another through the power of friendship.
